Social Gathering Before/After

Ride date has been changed to Saturday, October 23 in order to avoid the madding crowd that will swarm University Ave in North Park for a marathon on Sunday, October 24.

This route will start from Rouleur Brewing Company in North Park. The places you'll stop through will include the entrance to the Cabrillo National Monument, Mt Soladad, Old Town, Liberty Station, Pepper Park and USS Midway. Total elevation gain is estimated to be around 2,400 feet and just over 100 km.

This populaire is called "Ol' School" for the following reasons:

  • There is no electronic route to download to your computers. Navigation will be by paper cue sheet which will be handed out to you at the start. You may use your computer to determine your mileage for each turn and control location. Suggest you invest in a alligator-clip set up on your handle bars or follow Osvaldo.
  • There will be no electronic proof of passage. You will be issued a brevet card listing all of the controls. Some controls require you to obtain receipts from designated merchants. Some will require you to answer questions about a landmark or sign you will pass. There may be one control where a volunteer will sign or stamp your brevet card. How quaint!
  • You may form teams to navigate together, though results will be recorded for each individual rider. You may use your google map during ride if you need help.

When you finish, you will sign your brevet cards in whatever state of "tatterness" after 100km and hand in the crumpled receipts and the info questions answered in the most illegible chicken scratches possible.

There will also be a competition for how old school you are gonna be for this populaire. Points (to be determined later) will be awarded for:

  • Bike frame material (steel is real).
  • Type of shifters (we're down for downtube).
  • Frame pumps, not cartidges (bonus points for Silca or Zefal pumps).
  • Gearing (the less the merrier). Fixie bikes reign supreme.
  • Type of jersey (wool is cool). Bonus points for any edition of the San Diego Randonneurs wool jerseys.
  • Cat-Eye or any comparable non-GPS bike computer that measures distance by the rotation of the spinning wheel.

The winner or winners will receive a prize to be determined.

Registration will include coffee and light snacks at the start and staffed control with provisions during the populaire.
