1/6/2022 Update: Due to the rise in COVID cases in San Diego County, participants are asked to have masks with them and to follow mask requirements when indoors at stores or markets. To help avoid your need to enter stores, we are planning to set up a self-prepared food drop off for pick up at the Rainbow Park control on 5th St. You can prepare your own lunch to drop off at the start. A brevet worker will take them to the Rainbow control for you to pick up. Items left behind will be discarded. We will also provide water and snacks at the control.

San Diego's Randonneurs' new year begins on the day when we host the Rainbow 200k. This brevet route explores the north inland sections of San Diego County. Leaving Doyle Park in University City, you ride through UC San Diego campus and descend down Torrey Pines before making your eastward progression. Your ride out will consist of several climbs such as Del Dios, Circle R, Couser Canyon and Rice Canyon before reaching Rainbow. After a stop for lunch at the Rainbow Market, you make your way westward riding through Fallbrook and Bonsall, then proceeding on the San Luis Rey bike path that parallels Highway 76 along the San Luis Rey River. After reaching Oceanside, you now proceed south and ride through several San Diego beach communities such as Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar, passing the statue informally called the Kook and the Del Mar Race Tracks, seeing the waves of the Pacific Ocean lapping the coast as you ride by. After your last bit of climbing passing Torrey Pines State Preserve, you return to Doyle Park for the finish.

RWGPS route map is preliminary. Final route will be published a week before the brevet after the workers ride.

All riders must follow RUSA rules. Helmet, lights and reflective gear are a must (lights and reflective gear must be worn between dusk to dawn. Riders must follow all local traffic laws and regulations.

Although bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists and are subject to the same rules and regulations, it is crucial that bicyclists pay attention to traffic signs and signals and follow all rules to reduce the risk of collisions, while on the road. Refer to the California Driver Handbook to become familiar with these rules. This excerpt is found at the DMV website for Sharing the Road (FFDL37) and can be read here.
