Your KOM moment: Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, King of the Missions. One of the 3 missions you'll pass for this brevet.

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED. See you next summer solstice.

On the longest day of the year, it is only appropriate to celebrate with a long day of riding. As this year's summer solstice is on a Sunday, it would be wrong not to organize a brevet, especially after what seems like the longest night we went through during the pandemic. During "June Gloom", temperature will be kept comfortable. If inland temperature is projected to be hot, you will reach the coast before noon where it should be comfortable.

Highlight of the Mission 300k are:

  • This route will reach 3 missions (Missions San Diego, San Luis Rey and San Juan Capistrano)
  • The start/finish has been moved to Coronado Brewing in the Morena district near Sea World
  • All the significant climbing will be in the first 51 miles of the brevet
  • The inland trek will include Highland Valley Road and Bandy Canyon Road through San Diego's wine country, descending into the San Pasqual Valley before climbing Lake Wohlford Road to Bates Nut Farm in Valley Center
  • Lunch pick up will be at Mission San Luis Rey at the benches next to the fountain. We will also provide snacks and refreshments
  • The final half of the brevet will be along the coast to San Juan Capistrano and back
  • Instead of the usual Rose Canyon bike path, you'll make an excursion through La Jolla and Pacific Beach

Sunset is at 19:59 on solstice day. Riders who completes this brevet before sunset (14 hours 18 minutes) will beat Helios, the Greek sun god, before he finishes his ride across the sky. They will be recognized with receiving a tube of sun block and can claim "I have crushed Helios" for the year.

ALL SAN DIEGO RANDONNEURS EVENTS ARE ONLY OPEN TO PARTICIPANTS WHOSE RUSA MEMBERSHIP IS CURRENT.

Randonneuring is a self-supporting event  – There will be no day of registration available and if there are any volunteers available, they will only be at Start/Finish or establish controls in the cue sheet. There is no SAG for this event.

All riders must follow RUSA rules and can be found here. Helmet, lights and reflective gear are a must (lights and reflective gear must be worn between dusk to dawn. Riders must follow all local traffic laws and regulations.

Although bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists and are subject to the same rules and regulations, it is crucial that bicyclists pay attention to traffic signs and signals and follow all rules to reduce the risk of collisions, while on the road. Refer to the California Driver Handbook to become familiar with these rules. This excerpt is found at the DMV website for Sharing the Road (FFDL37) and can be read here.

If a RUSA member or Non-RUSA member event participant rides behind, side by side, in front of (a distance long enough or close enough in proximity that indicates they are riding together), or gives/receive assistance from/to non-registered riders it is a violation of the event rules. Any violation of the RUSA/Event rules will be grounds for instant disqualification. No exceptions!
