We are bringing back a 2019 brevet route. Unlike the last time, the route has been "ironed out" so to speak by reducing the amount of urban turns and travel to get riders out to the I-15 corridor to enjoy the inland charm of San Diego and Riverside Counties. By doing so, the number of controls between the start and finish has been reduced to 3, not 4 and 5 is right out, like the count of the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch after pulling the pin. Less controls and EPP will require you to have the self-discipline to manage your food intake and hydration. At least you are not far from civilization to stock up and fill up. Though there are long stretches without traffic lights, you will have to negotiate through some amount of urban jungle, especially along the coast and Downtown.

Starting from the Best Western Americana Inn in San Ysidro, you'll make your way through Chula Vista and National City, riding north through Logan Heights to cut through Balboa Park to avoid the Harbor Dr mess as it is being improved. A quick dip into Misson Valley followed by a short climb up Murphy Canyon bike trail on the north side of the valley, you'll make your way pass MCAS Miramar (former home of Top Gun School when it was a NAS) and press further north on Pomorado Rd to reach Lake Hodges and Escondido. On Old Hwy 395, you'll continue north to Rainbow before entering Riverside County, passing through Temecula and Lake Elsinore. If you are lucky on timing, remnants of the California poppies carpetting the hillsides of Temescal Valley may still be seen. You'll reach Corona (the non-COVID one) before turning around.

Retracing the route south to Hwy 76, you'll tmake your way toward the coast through Bonsall, connecting up to the San Luis Rey bike path that follows along the San Luis Rey River and Hwy 76 to Oceanside. You'll ride down the coast through the various North San Diego beach communities of Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar before climbing up Torrey Pines bluff to reach UCSD. You'll follow the Rose Canyon and Rose Creek bike paths to Mission Bay, then ride through Old Town to avoid the Barnett Ave/MCRD interconnect on Pacific Hwy to reach Downtown. At Sweetwater River, you'll reconnect on to National City Blvd/Broadway and then to the finish.

If you are joining us for the first time as a randonneur, you will need to:

  1. Join RUSA for an annual membership of $30 at https://rusa.org/cgi-bin/memberjoin_GF.pl.
  2. After you receive your 5 digit RUSA number, register with San Diego Randonneurs by clicking on the link Join San Diego Randonneurs
  3. If you have any questions during the sign up process, send a quick note to sdrandos@gmail.com.

ALL SAN DIEGO RANDONNEURS EVENTS ARE ONLY OPEN TO PARTICIPANTS WHOSE RUSA MEMBERSHIP IS CURRENT.

You will need to register for this ride in advance. There is no day-of registration. Start/Finish will be staffed. SAG support and staffing at a control along the route will depend on volunteers available for this event.

All riders must follow RUSA rules. Helmet, lights and reflective gear are a must (lights and reflective gear must be worn between dusk to dawn). Riders must follow all local traffic laws and regulations.

Although bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists and are subject to the same rules and regulations, it is crucial that bicyclists pay attention to traffic signs and signals and follow all rules to reduce the risk of collisions, while on the road. Refer to the California Driver Handbook to become familiar with these rules. This excerpt is found at the DMV website for Sharing the Road (FFDL37) and can be read here.
