    Get me there
    Solana Beach Train Station
    400 N Cedros Ave
    Solana Beach, Ca 92075

    $30.00

Corona 300k is the Coronado without the "D'OH" and the 5,000 ft of additional climbing. Though total elevation gain is approximately 8,000 ft, the highest point on this brevet is 1,350 ft. After mile 90 when you reach the start of SART, the route will be primarily flat back to Solana Beach, avoiding the Torrey Pines climb.

Leaving the start at the Solana Beach train station, you'll immediately start climbing on Lomas Santa Fe Rd, reminding you that in Spanish, lomas means hills. You'll negotiate over several hills on your way to Rancho Santa Fe before hitting the Del Dios Hwy toward Escondido. Continuing north, you'll follow along I-15 on Old Hwy 395 through Fallbrook and Rainbow before entering Riverside County. After Temecula where you can stop for water and food at various stores, you'll progress further north through Lake Elsinore and Temescal Canyon to reach the city of Corona, the name which once was associated with a fun Mexican beer but is now maligned by a virus.

Unlike the Santiago 300k which does its best to avoid the Santa Ana River Trail, this brevet fully embraces it as you will enter from Green River Rd and ride the full length to the mouth of the Santa Ana River where it flows into the Pacific. You'll make your way south through the various Orange County beach communities (including the dreaded Laguna Beach, the capital of a$$hole drivers). Through San Onofre State Beach and onto I-5 in order to continue sans Camp Pendleton base access (you are welcome to ride through the base if you have a valid pass and are willing to pad bonus miles and elevation gain) to return to civilization when entering San Diego County at Oceanside. A few more coastal miles and you are back in Solana Beach.

For this ACP brevet, San Diego Randonneurs will accept the following as proof of passage:

    • Electronic proof of passage (EPP) - at the end of the brevet, you have 24 hours after the official finish time to submit a link of your activity saved on Strava, Ride with GPS (RWGPS) or Garmin Connect to the brevet organizer. Please make sure your privacy setting is changed to public so that the entire activity trace is viewable. If you need to submit the entire activity in multiple activity traces, the end and beginning of each trace are near each other and viewable. Ideally, the sum of the separate traces will result in the entire route. You are responsible checking your computers regularly to make sure they are working properly and recording. If your trace is missing any section, especially where you passed a control, the file you submitted wiill be rejected. You are also responsible for making sure that your activity is uploaded to whichever app that will report your brevet trace. As backup, you should take selfie photos at each control if your bike computer craps out mid-ride or cannot upload for whatever reason. Telling the brevet organizer or RBA that you rode with someone will not be accepted as an alternate form of proof of passage.
    • Selfies at controls - at the end of the brevet, you have 24 hours after the official finish time to submit to the brevet organizer or the RBA by email the selfie photos of you or your bike at the control. If the control is at a store, have that store in the background. If at an intersection, then have the street signs as your selfie background. San Diego Randonneurs organizers highly recommend that even if you are going with EPP, you should still take selfie photos as backup.
    • Brevet card - if you require a traditional brevet card, please advise the RBA immediately.

    Get me there
    Homewood Suites - Liberty Station
    2576 Laning Rd
    San Diego, California 92106

    $45.00

To the Stars is the 400k equivalent of the 8k600k, with Palomar Mountain as marquee climb.

This brevet will start from the Homewood Suites at Liberty Station. For randos who are flying in to take part, the start/finish is about a mile from San Diego International Airport. Parking is also available at Liberty Station by Homewood Suites. From Point Loma, you'll start your ascent on Linda Vista Rd to climb out of the San Diego River valley. The early start means light traffic and hopefully well-timed green lights through the urban settings in Linda Vista and Kearny Mesa. Once you reach Scripps Ranch, you will arrive in the "country" though the swath of residential homes along the way would appear otherwise.

The more commonplace route to Palomar is to ride through Escondido and Valley Center to climb Palomar South Grade. To the Stars 400k will seek the road less climbed. After negotiating your way up Pomerado Rd, Scripps Poway Parkway and Hwy 67 to Ramona for warm up, you'll make your way up Black Canyon Rd, a dirt road through the Mesa Grande reservation to reach Lake Henshaw before your climb up Palomar East Grade. Whereas most would end their suffering at the general store where the South Grade descent starts, this route will go all the way to the Palomar Observatory, which adds another 1,300 ft of elevation gain from and back to the general store. Just before the start of our descent down South Grade, you can hopefully find solace and knowing that in the first 81 of 250 miles, you have finished 60% of the climbing.

From the general store to the start of Cole Grade to reach Valley Center, you'll enjoy an extended descent to leave the mountains behind as you make your way to the coast. From Escondido you'll take Jesmond Dene to Deer Springs Rd and then to Fallbrook, known as the "Avocado Capital of the World" before making our way to Oceanside where you'll make your way north to San Clemente along the coast before turning around for the final stretch back to San Diego. For visiting randos not familiar with Southern California riding, be advised that you will need to jump on Interstate 5 between Oceanside and Las Pulgas unless you have a base pass. As daunting as it may sound, riding on that stretch of Interstate 5 is legal and safe. For added pleasure, you might even blow pass cars stuck in traffic riding south bound back into San Diego County.

The final stretch will be the coastal riding at night from Oceanside through La Jolla to reach the finish at Point Loma. Your only "obstacle" will be making your way over Torrey Pines. Right before turning into Liberty Station, you'll catch a glimpse of the downtown skyline illuminated by the bright city lights then pass the USS Recruit on watch for your return.

    Vons La Jolla Colony
    7788 Regents Rd
    San Diego, California 92122

David is bringing back this popular populaire that showcases Elfin Forest for an easy Sunday spin.

Starting from the Vons center in La Jolla Colony, you'll head north, riding through UCSD to descend down the UCSD bike path. After completing the short but punchy climb up Carmel Mountain Rd, you'll head for the 52 bike path on which you'll ride until you jump off at Rancho Santa Fe Farms to continue north toward the posh neighborhood of Rancho Santa Fe. Heading east on Del Dios Hwy, you'll ride by Lake Hodges Dam as you climb into Escondido where you'll stop at a McDonalds where you will begin your return leg.

The return journey will take you on to Harmony Grove Rd taking you by the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve on your extended descent on a quiet country road surrounded by suburban sprawl surrounding it. Immediately after the right-hand turn on Elfin Forest Rd you'lll start your climb back to the community of San Elijo. Though ever so close to the dreaded Double Peak, you will only skirt by its base as you head west on San Elijo Rd through the village of Olivenhain to return to the coast on Lomas Santa Fe, slogging over some short but fun climbs, finish up with the ever so popular Torrey Pines before descending down Gilman Dr and then through the neighborhoods to return to University City.

    Get me there
    Days Inn Encinitas
    133 Encinitas Blvd
    San Diego, CA 92024

    $60.00

ATTENTION: THE START/FINISH LOCATION HAS BEEN MOVED TO DAYS INN IN ENCINITAS. THE OVERNIGHT CONTROL HAS BEEN MOVED TO BORREGO SPRINGS.

If Julius Caesar were writing his commentary on randonneuring in San Diego County, he would begin with: "San Diego est omnis divisa in partes tres." All San Diego is divided into 3 parts: Coast, Mountain and Desert. This 600k will traverse through all 3 regions of the county. From Encinitas on the coast, you'll climb your way to the Laguna Mountain and descend down to the desert of Borrego Springs. Returning to the foot of Palomar Mountain and then to Lake Elsinore, you'll coast down from Oceanside to Encinitas with the Pacific to your right and likely tailwind for the finish. Each region offers its own unique flora, fauna, geological features and landscape; each with its breath-taking views.

The climbing during this 600k is about 16,000 ft over 205 miles on the first day and 10,000 ft over 168 miles. By the time you reach the Borrego Springs overnight control set up at the Stanlunds, you'll have taken care of Viejas Grade and Kitchen Creek. The big climb will be at the start on the second day clawing your back to Ranchita on Montezuma Grade. As a consolation, per RWGPS this route is 600.6 km with 8,049 meters. You will be responsible for any bonus miles and elevation gains should you ride off course.

Here are some bullet points about I Have Reservations 600k

    • Drop bag at the overnight control will be supported: you'll check in your drop bag at the start; you'll pick up your bag at the overnight control; you'll retrieve your drop back when you finish. 1 bag per randonneur.
    • It is being approved as a 8k600k for those checking off their ACP 10000 award requirements.
    • The start location is now at the Days Inn in Encinitas near the Encinitas train station/transit center. Though Uber/Lyft is recommended if you are flying in, there is public transportation available to reach the start hotel from San Diego International Airport.
    • During your stay, you can take the Coaster to Oceanside up north and as far south as Downtown to take the trolley at the Old Town station to reach various parts of San Diego. By bike you can visit various north San Diego beach communities. Micro breweries and restaurants are abound between Solana Beach and Carlsbad. A short walk to Coast Blvd dining options are endless.
    • Across the street from the Days Inn is a shopping center with a health food grocery store (code phrase for expensive) and restaurants.
    • We will confirm if the Days Inn will allow non-guest parking in their lot for a fee. The Encinitas transit center which is a block away has public parking available.
    • For more economical lodging options, here are the following:
    • Weather will vary from region to region, with the May Grey overcast when you leave the start by the coast, clear skies but cooler conditions when in the mountains. Though the desert will be warm, your likely evening arrival will result in more comfortable conditions through Borrego Springs. Rain, though statistically likely, should not be a major concern for this brevet by early May.
    • The overnight control is at the Stanlunds in Borrego Springs. Food will be served.
    • We have pre-booked 7 rooms at the Stanlunds to make 14 sleeping "spaces" available for an additional cost. Below is the cost schedule:
      • Separate bed in double rooms - 8 spaces - $94 per space
      • Shared bed (2 per King size bed) - 6 spaces - $73 per space
      • You will need to register for this brevet in order to reserve a space. Will be based on first come first serve basis.
      • Here is the link to the Google sheet tracking bed assignment/availability.
    • You are welcome to make reservations on your own as there are other lodging available. You will need to retrieve and return your drop bag at the Stanlunds.

No doubt you will have reservations when deciding to take on this brevet. After you review the route, you will realize that this route does have many federally recognized "Indian" reservations for the 2 major groups of indigenous people, the Kumeyaay and Payómkawichum, who once thrived in this region before Junipero Serra's arrival. History today has reservations about him.

This brevet is devised for experienced randonneurs looking for that added challenge to spice up their cycling life. Take stock of your training and fitness level before considering this brevet. Upon your successful completion of this arduous endeavor, you, like Caesar, will declare: VENI VIDI VICI.

For this ACP brevet, San Diego Randonneurs will accept the following as proof of passage:

    Get me there
    Iipay Tipai Kumeyaay Mut Niihepok
    2829 Juan St
    San Diego, CA 92110

Long before Cabrillo first landed in San Diego Harbor in 1542, the Kumayaay are the first people who have been residing in the San Diego region. This populaire will explore our region's ancestoral past by visiting various parks and centers dedicated to preserving Kumayaay history and heritage.

The start will be at the Iipay ~ Tipay Kumeyaay Mut Niihepok - Land of the First People - outdoor exhibit in the Old Town State Historic Park located on the corner of Taylor St and Juan St. When Junipero Serra arrived in 1769, this area was the Kumeyaay village of Kosa'aay, which means "drying out place" in English. On the hill overlooking the village, the Spanish set up the presidio and the original mission, though in 1774 the padres relocated it further inland to have a more reliable source of water along the San Diego River. Cosoy Way on top of Presidio Hill reminds us of the area's former name.

From the Iipay ~ Tipay Kumeyaay Mut Niihepok, you'll make your way along the San Diego River through Mission Valley, Allied Gardens and San Carlos to Mission Trails Regional Park where you'll ride on the Father Junipero Serra Trail (perhaps we should rename it the Dam Trail), a pave road closed to cars through Mission Gorge that will take you to Old Mission Dam. It was built by the Spanish in 1803 to impound water for irrigating the fields around the relocated mission. Mission Trails Regional Park, the largest municiple park in California, was once near the Kumeyaay village Senyaweche where the first people cultivated and gathered the natural resources to sustain and thrive while living along the river. Today the riparian landscape provides a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of mechanized life surrounding it. The park offers an abundance of hiking and mountain biking trails and rock climbing sites. Check out the 5-Peak Challenge. It is worth many return trips to enjoy the natural legacy offered by the park. Before exiting Mission Trails Park, you'll stop at Kumeyaay Lake Campground entrance to check in as the first control.

A short stint on West Hills Pkwy, you'll continue on the 52 bike path climbing to the Mission Trails Summit before making your descent into Tierrasanta where you'll return to urban cycling. Through the neighborhoods of Mira Mesa and Scripps Ranch, you'll reach the Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center at Pauwai (Poway). The interpretive center is a 5-acre park founded by a partnership with the City of Poway, Friends of the Kumeyaay, and the San Pasqual Band of Indians. 4th graders in San Diego County (or at least in the Poway Unified School District) take school tours at the center as part of their California history curriculum. The center is scheduled to be open on this Saturday.

You'll make your way toward the coast from Poway through Rancho Santa Fe and Encinitas, passing Black Mountain, to reach the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center. Though not a Kumayaay historic center, it has on display a replica of a Kumeyaay circular, dome-shaped structure called "awa". Nick Neely in his book "Alta California", which recounts his retracing of the Portola Expedition as recorded by Father Juan Crespi, describes his visit to the nature center. Jenny, a member of San Diego Randonneurs, worked as the editor with the author and was instrumental in bringing this book to print.

You'll take the San Elijo Lagoon bike trail back to Solana Hills and over Torrey Pines to return to Old Town. To add a little variety, the final leg will have you ride on  Genesee Ave to Regents Rd, followed by Moraga Ave and Avati Dr descent to reach Morena Blvd.

    5840 El Camino Real #101
    Carlsbad, California 92008

    $5.00

With the Race Across America kicking off in June, this populaires celebrates this ultra-distance cycling event by riding on a mini-micro- almost nano portion of the 3000-mile hell on two wheels challenge. This year we are honored and excited that Mr John Marino, founder of RAAM and current RUSA member with 3 K-Hounds under his belt, will be the ride leader.

Starting from Rouleur Brewing in Carlsbad, you'll ride down to the coast to the Oceanside Pier, where the race starts. Jumping on to the San Luis Rey bike path, you'll follow the parade start portion of the race route, making your way to Mance Buchanon Park. The "official" race course begins on College Blvd, climbing Sleeping Indian and then up Old Castle Rd to Valley Center Rd. You can endeavor to hammer and race this section of the populaire route, Whereas the RAAM racers will turn left on Valley Center Rd to continue to Atlantic City, New Jersey several days later for the finish, you'll make a right to descend down to Escondido and back to Rouleur for food and beer with John who will recount his war stories of RAAM.

Though this populaire will conform to standard RUSA rule regarding the order of finish by last name for the overall event, there will be a "race" element in the route for those who opt to take part for prizes. Details will be provided as we are close to the start of the event.

On Tuesday, June 11, RAAM solo and RAW (Race Across the West) racers will start their epic endeavor from the Oceanside Pier, followed by the team start on Saturday, June 15.

While still on the coast to stay cool and comfy, this route will have a bit "work" starting and finishing inland. The route's shape inspired Kelly D to name it after the constellation. Indeed it is a "stellar" design.

Another coastal 200k, but this time there will be some effort riding through the "lumpy" sections of Rancho Santa Fe, Olivenhain and on El Camino Real to Carlsbad before the return on on the coast. This brevet will be the precursor the climbing season in store as we get ready for autumn.

Despite the deceptively flat landscape on Silver Strand, the prevailing wind from the north in the afternoon will definitely spice up the ride for the finish.

Tim is bringing back our Fall Classic by hosting Kitchen Creek 200k. The breath-taking scenery all along the route is worth the effort. The beauty of this brevet is it's shear simplicity: very very short route cue sheet, no traffic lights, less than 10 stop signs and extended sections of open roads with few cars. On Kitchen Creek there is a gated section completely closed to car traffic.

The start is in the parking lot behind the former Major's Diner. You read it correctly: Per Google, Major's is permanent closed at the time of scheduling this ride. Not that they were extremely friendly to us when we need to use their bathroom. Still sorry to see a local business shutter.
